Can you be too professional?

My answer, dear people, is yes.  Not just because we are now all so wired into each other’s minute social movements via texts, tweets and status updates, but because we have always done business with people who we like, and trust.
Whether it makes strict business sense or not, if you take proposals from two people and one of them happens to mention that they are also a fan of your favourite sports team, or tells a joke that makes you laugh, or shares a personal experience that you can relate …

Good Author Gone Bad

I am one of those people who believes that vindictive behaviour is never ok, even in defense.  Some people admire that as grace; others deride it as being a doormat.  Alice Hoffman is in the latter camp.

Music to Write To

Music was my first love, so it’s not surprising that it can have a huge impact of my productivity, serving as a distraction or inspiration while I am writing.  For example, no matter how many studies are done on the intellectual stimulation provided by Mozart I for one can’t write a decent word with that danged harpsichord twanging in the background.
Perhaps it has more to do with the fact that with the odd exception of a particularly melancholy aria I have never been a fan of the 18th century soap …

Do we really need words?

We seem so desperate to crush our language these days.  It seems inevitable that in cramming our thoughts into 140 characters, and abbreviating the English language into a new staccato short hand for texting we are losing some of our lexicon.
Huge chunks actually.
And while many people will tell you that we can get by quite nicely on our limited vocabulary, I can’t help feel a sense of loss for the hundreds of words that die out daily.
Where is the campaign against the extinction of rare words such as ‘twixt’ and …
